The necessity of standardized, digital documentation in process industries
From an expert’s perspective
Improving technical documentation
Experts consider VDI 2770 Blatt 1 a key tool to enhance the quality and organization of technical documentation. The guideline enables a structured, uniform provision of manufacturer information - especially beneficial in complex large-scale systems like plant engineering.
Simplifying process workflows
The standard for technical documentation aims to simplify workflows around the handover of manufacturer information - beneficial for both manufacturers and users/operators. Standardized handover of manufacturer data is regarded as essential for quality technical documentation.
Supporting digital transformation
The guideline is an integral component of the digital data chain and supports the implementation of digital twins by providing standardized documentation packages. The Asset Administration Shell maps the structures of the guideline to the “Document Handover” and thus ensures normative-compliant data transmission.
Automation and increased efficiency
By enabling manufacturer information to be transferred automatically, the guideline reduces effort on all sides. It aims to make operations and processes more efficient and to benefit all parties through the new standards.
Standardization and interoperability
VDI 2770 creates standardized formats for the digital exchange of all manufacturer information and their metadata on document level. It allows clear categorization of documents, simplifying later storage and retrieval.
Cross-industry applicability
The guideline is usable across industries and can be demanded by plant operators from their suppliers. This underlines its flexibility and ability to be integrated into existing IT infrastructures and industrial standards.
Documentation container vs. document container
A documentation container (per VDI 2770) includes a main PDF and XML file plus a document container for each individual PDF file.
The documentation container aggregates all documents forming the complete technical documentation of a product, whereas a document container is a single technical document including all relevant metadata.
Why adoption is important for you
Non-compliance with VDI 2770 Blatt 1 “Operation of process plants – minimum requirements for digital manufacturer information in the process industry” can lead to significant organizational challenges: inefficient document organization, lack of transparency, and difficulties in document management. These issues may impair internal workflows and strain relationships with suppliers and customers.
Moreover, non-compliance jeopardizes the integrity of your information and the long-term archival of your documents. Thus, adhering to the guideline is crucial to maintain your company’s efficiency, transparency, and competitive edge. You can download our implementation checklist (PDF) to support you.
An Asset Administration Shell (AAS) platform like twinsphere revolutionizes how companies in the process industry manage their digital manufacturer information. By creating a unified and interoperable interface between real assets and their digital representations, twinsphere ensures efficient management and utilization of manufacturer data.

Detailed product information about twinsphere
The twinsphere suite is an advanced AAS platform developed to address the challenges of managing digital manufacturer information per the VDI 2770 standard. The platform’s dedicated VDI 2770 adapter enables companies in the process industry to manage, convert, and distribute technical documents efficiently - while ensuring standards compliance and process optimization.
Technical details
Compliance:
twinsphere enables creation and management of document containers in conformity with the guideline. This includes structuring and archiving documents in a standardized format recognized by industry. Users can upload documents, edit their metadata, and export them in required formats. The platform supports multiple file types.
PDF-A converter:
The built-in PDF-A conversion ensures that documents are suitable for long-term archiving and meet requirements for document containers and documentation containers.
Digital Data Chain Consortium (DDCC) Support:
twinsphere supports DDCC requirements, making it ideal for companies operating in a digitally networked supply chain. An API, plus connector and gateway services, promote interoperability and integration with existing systems and processes.
The AAS platform gives us rapid access to a scalable AAS infrastructure to sustainably drive forward our digital twin activities.

How it works
twinsphere is a SaaS solution for standardized transmission of product information across the entire lifecycle. It is built on the Asset Administration Shell standard by IDTA. Via a twinsphere SDK, you can easily generate AASs, upload them to the platform, and manage them there.
For transferring conform documents, the VDI adapter in the twinsphere suite can convert either documents or individual attributes from certain submodels (e.g. Document Handover) into valid containers. The suite provides configurability about which documents from which submodels should be used.
Through gateways or standard interfaces, authorized systems (e.g. a customer portal) can retrieve the AASs. A push mechanism allows configuration of which systems get delivered the AAS or just the containers. The VDI 2770-compliant transfer enables delivery of your verified, high-quality digital twin to Sharecat.
A messaging service ensures no customer misses a significant change in product information.
Application in the process industry
twinsphere is particularly suited for companies in the process industry with complex document handover requirements. This includes sectors like chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, where precise and always retrievable technical documentation is critical and digital manufacturer information must be provided.
-
With comprehensive support for industry standards, twinsphere is a forward-looking solution that simplifies document management and accelerates digital transformation in companies.
We want to eliminate data silos and provide the required, standardized product information exactly where our users need it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on VDI 2770
What is the VDI guideline for providing digital manufacturer information in the process industry?
The VDI 2770 guideline standardizes the exchange of manufacturer information between manufacturers and plant operators in the process industry. It defines a container format and metadata model for categorizing documents and supports efficient document transfer and management.
Who is the guideline relevant for?
The guideline is aimed at manufacturers and plant operators in the process industry seeking standardized and efficient document exchange and management.
What do the packages include?
A VDI 2770 package consists of a structured main PDF document, an XML version, and nested document containers containing PDFs and XML metadata. This structure enables a clear mapping of documents to products.
What improvements does the guideline bring to document organization?
VDI 2770 significantly enhances document organization, especially in complex systems. It simplifies information retrieval and leads to time and resource savings.
How can information be accessed?
Information can be quickly and easily accessed via a QR code placed directly on equipment—e.g. a pump or valve—enabling efficient retrieval of relevant information.
What requirements does the guideline impose on documents?
All documents must at least be in PDF/A format, with PDF/A-2a and PDF/A-3a as priorities. The guideline defines minimum requirements for manufacturer information and supports lifecycle documentation management.
What are document versions?
In the VDI 2770 data model, besides documents, there are document versions. Each version is assigned various metadata such as language, description, status, page count and participating parties.
How is information integrity monitored?
Checksums can monitor information integrity. Checksums for both documentation containers and document containers can be calculated to detect changes.
How does technical documentation contribute to digitization in the process industry?
VDI 2770 establishes a digital data chain, advancing digitization in the process industry. It enables automated exchange of machine documents across the supply chain—saving time, money and resources.
Can I use other document classifications?
Yes. Other document classification systems can be used alongside VDI 2770. The guideline is a recommendation to support standardization, but other classification systems may also be used. Source: www.digitaldatachain.com
Can I use additional metadata beyond those specified?
Yes, you can include additional metadata as long as the metadata required by VDI 2770 is included. The guideline sets a minimum standard that may be extended. Source: www.digitaldatachain.com
What else is specified besides document categories?
VDI 2770 also specifies references to subordinate component documentations, file formats, metadata structure, and more. Source: www.digitaldatachain.com
Is there a separate document container for each language of a document?
Yes, for each language version present as an individual document, there should be a separate document container. If the document is multilingual itself, a single document container suffices. Source: www.digitaldatachain.com
